Lebron James’s next sneaker – the Lebron 16s – will be themed after the Kanye West & Jay-Z duo Watch the Throne in basketball’s latest collab with rap.
No matter who’s team colors he decides to don, Lebron James will always be synonymous with the NBA and basketball. Interestingly enough, he also has quite the unique link to the hip hop industry; he always has since the peak of his superstardom.
At the height of his fame, he was the subject of a music video for “Forever,” a song performed by Drake, Lil Wayne, Eminem and Kanye West. The summer of 2018 saw TMZ leak audio of Lebron James attempting to try his hand at rapping in the booth in audio that was originally recorded in 2014. That same year, the Los Angeles Laker stirred some minor controversy within the hip hop community when he likened himself to being a “hip hop historian” during an episode of The Shop, Lebron’s HBO talk series.
Lebron James’s connection with the hip hop industry will continue to expand sooner rather than later given that his latest shoe – the Lebron 16s – will feature a special colorway inspired by iconic rap duo Watch the Throne.
Hip hop heads should remember Watch the Throne as the collaboration between former friends Kanye West and Jay-Z. They most notably dropped an album together of the same name back in 2011 which featured their Grammy winning single, “N*ggas in Paris.” Kanye West and Jay-Z may not be on the best of terms these days, but eight years after that classic album dropped, Lebron James is dropping a sneaker in its honor.
Judging from the Basket4Ballers calendar, Lebron 16’s Watch the Throne edition is set to release during the upcoming NBA All Star Weekend. Current rumors are suggesting that these bad boys may drop on the day of the All Star Game. We’ll have to wait and see to find out as there is no official release date yet.
