The capstone of May: Nike moves from the runway to the playground with its highly anticipated Nike x Sacai collaboration releasing at the end of the month.
Originally debuted on the runway during Paris fashion week as a part of Sacai’s Whimsical SS19 Collection, the Nike x Sacai collaboration will soon be available for consumer purchase on May 16th (LDVWaffle) and May 30th (Blazer), via an official statement from Nike. However, they did confirm that the beloved SNKRS app will be dropping both models on the 30th of May.
Japanese designer and founder of Sacai, Chitose Abe, excellently applied Sacai’s layering techniques to pieces of Nike history, not only with the materials used but with the styles of sneakers. For instance, the LDVWaffle model is a forced, but homogenous mix between the OG LDV running shoe (one of the earliest Nike runners) and the Waffle Daybreak – both of which don the waffle sole and mesh upper. While the Nike x Sacai Blazer Mid is a smooth cross between the Blazer Mid and the Dunk.
Needless to say, she did an exceptional job. The colorways of both sneakers and materials balance together beautifully to bring the consumer pieces of art they can either dress up (with a suit or dress) or wear casually (with a pair of jeans and a tee).
The LDVWaffle will be available in either a blue, red, yellow and white colorway, or in the more outgoing pink, green, yellow, orange and white colorway. Both sport the classic mesh upper and waffle sole while showing off the double printed patent leather swooshes, double tongue, suede heel cup, toe box and lace guards, and elongated midsole.
Additionally, the Blazer Mid appears in the same easy-on-the-eyes blue, red, yellow and white colorway as well as a simple baby blue, navy, and white colorway. The sneaker features an all-leather upper, cushioned collar, and rubber sole, toe box, and heel cup which extends up the back of the sneaker.
The great thing about collaborating with classic styles of Nike sneakers is that they rarely fetch a retail price over $200 (such as Virgil Abloh’s “The Ten” Collection). The Nike x Sacai LDVWaffel will retail for $180 and the Nike x Sacai Blazer Mid will retail for an easy $140.
The price won’t hurt the wallet, but the time and effort to successfully purchase a pair for retail will be a burden, most especially for the unlucky ones who will have to turn to the secondary markets where the sneakers begrudgingly ask for a $600-$1000 price tag.
Regardless, if you can get either of them, in my opinion, the Nike x Sacai Collaboration sneaker is the one to buy this year.
