It’s a good thing that Sophie Cunningham’s jersey keeps selling out, because she needs the money: the WNBA keeps fining her.
Cunningham, 28, has been with the WNBA since 2019, but she has recently gotten her moment in the spotlight since joining the Indiana Fever and becoming Caitlin Clark’s “enforcer.” But, the Missouri native’s biggest fight may be with the entire WNBA, as the league keeps handing down punishments for stuff that she says.
WNBA Fines Sophie Cunningham Again Over Comments About Refs
"The WNBA fined me," Cunningham said on the Aug. 5 episode of ‘Show Me Something,’ her podcast with her high school friend, Bravo star West Wilson. "Dude, they fined me $1,500. I was like, ‘What? This is just the beginning! You’re kidding!’"
The WNBA issued this latest fine after Cunningham complained about getting hit with a $500 penalty over a TikTok mocking the league’s referees. Sophie posted a clip of her lip-syncing to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild,” while referring to “some refs” being “slow” or “useless.”
Cunningham later joked about it. “IDK why this is funny to me. OK, you got it, bud! Cause there’s not more important things to be worried with out league right now.”

According to IndyStar, Cunningham is now $1.5k poorer because of the following:
“If I was a ref, I know I would mess up all the time. Like, I’m not saying that your job is easy, but when it is a simple call right in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing? What are you doing? [The refs are] just so inconsistent, like, that’s one thing. If you’re on the other team and you’re going to be fouling the f—k out of me, cool. But let me do it to you…I think players across the league, and new fans across the country, are like, what is going on with the refs? And I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’ And you fining me $500 is not going to do s—t."
At the time, Cunningham joked that the WNBA would fine her again. The league did so.
“[The WNBA] email(s) our GM, and she pulls me aside and says, ‘Sophie, I’ve got to talk to you,’ and this is in front of everybody,” Cunningham said on the Aug. 5 episode. “I’m like, ‘What did I do now?’ And just smiled and she goes, ‘Hey, they’re going to fine you again.’”
“I was like, I even told them I credited them that their job was hard,” continued Cunningham. “I did say that. I said that I would not be good at it. I did say that. Like, look at the whole picture. What are we doing? Ugh. But yeah, so I got fined for that.”

Cunninham has been outspoken in her criticism of the WNBA. Last month, when the league announced it was expanding to Philadelphia, Cleveland and Detroit, Sophie said that the WNBA should “listen to your players, too.”
“Where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play?" she pondered. “I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or [Cleveland].”
