2024 hasn’t been the most pleasant year in the career of multi-platinum Canadian rapper, Drake. For the most part, Drake has been in the headlines for a very much publicized feud with popular rap icon and proud West Coast native, Kendrick Lamar. The two were previously on good terms, largely seen atop the “Big 3” of modern rap alongside J. Cole, but tensions would boil over in recent years. Depending on who you ask, the winner coming out of the rap beef varies, but there’s no denying it changed many people’s view of the 37-year-old ex-Degrassi star.

Drake has emerged as a transcendent star beyond his musical achievements, successfully venturing into the realms of sports and fashion. His brand, October’s Very Own (OVO), has not only established itself as a successful music label but has also expanded into a thriving merchandise market. In addition to his independent OVO line, Drake has partnered with the renowned sneaker and athletic wear giant Nike to create the NOCTA sub-brand.

The Nike NOCTA sub-brand initially gained traction in the market, but recent releases, such as the Hot Step 2 "White on White" have struggled to capture the interest of the sneaker community. Whether it's due to market oversaturation or the backlash from the Kendrick Lamar controversy, the NOCTA venture has recently fallen flat. Much hope rests on the newly emerging images of the upcoming Nike NOCTA Hot Step 2 colorway, dubbed "Eggplant" for its predominant purple hue.

Will the sneaker market respond positively to the NOCTA Hot Step II "Eggplant" release?

With a first look at the “Eggplant” colorway, one can observe an elegant monochromatic transformation of the sneaker. This iteration showcases a rich purple hue that glistens across the shoe's surface, highlighting its distinctive texture and the blend of materials used in the upper design. The iconic NOCTA branding prominently adorns the tongue and is expected to also appear on the sock liner, enhancing the sneaker’s collaborative appeal. This design not only elevates the shoe’s aesthetic but also exemplifies the fusion of style and functionality that modern footwear enthusiasts desire.

As of now, there has been no official announcement from either Drake or Nike regarding the release date of the "Eggplant" version of the NOCTA Hot Step 2. However, certain outlets have suggested a Fall 2024 release date, which is appropriate given Drake's OVO identity. Drake fans and sneaker enthusiasts are advised to stay tuned for further updates, including more visuals that may be revealed soon. This highly anticipated release will likely hit the shelves through the Nike SNKRS platform and select retail outlets, retailing for approximately $200 USD.
