What is the key to Patrick Mahomes' success? (beyond being naturally talented at sports, having the discipline to refine that talent, and an organization that can elevate your talent to greatness, we mean).
It’s finding someone who gets you, who pushes you to succeed, who is on your wavelength—no matter what it is. Patrick found such a person early on in his life, back when he began dating Brittany Matthews, the star player on their high school soccer team, in 2012.
Years later, the woman now known as Brittany Mahomes is at every one of Patrick’s games as he leads the Kansas City Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes Says Wife Brittany Is ‘Just As Competitive’ As Him
"There's no better feeling than having someone by your side who is just as competitive as you and supports you in everything you do," Patrick. 29, said in a new interview with People.
Patrick said that he and Brittany “definitely” bonded over their shared love of sports. "Whether it was her in soccer or me in football or baseball, we both understood the level of commitment it takes," Patrick told People.
Brittany went on to play soccer for the University of Texas at Tyler. She set a school record by becoming the first player to score three hat-tricks in both a season and a career. After graduating, Brittany signed with Iceland’s Afturelding/Fram, briefly competing in the country’s third-tier soccer league. She retired from the sport in 2017, joining her then-boyfriend Patrick in Kansas City as he began his NFL career.
Though her time on the field ended, Brittany didn’t abandon soccer. She became a personal trainer upon returning to the States, which helped her develop into a fitness and lifestyle influencer.
In 2020, she purchased a stake in the Kansas City Current, a team playing in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Elsewhere in the interview, Patrick told People that he “just really loved sports” as a high schooler. “Definitely competitive, and always working to get better. I think a lot of students can relate to just wanting to work hard and have fun."
The discussion was part of Patrick’s partnership with T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights campaign, which offers small-town schools a chance to win upgrades to their athletic and academic programs. "Growing up in a small town, you know every dollar of support helps,” said Patric. “I’m grateful to be a part of this incredible program with T-Mobile, where we can support some deserving schools across the country."
Patrick's (and Brittany’s) competitive nature will come into play this coming NFL season. The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to build upon their dynasty after the Philadelphia Eagles denied them the three-peat in Super Bowl LX.
This season may also be the last time that Patrick plays alongside Travis Kelce (and for Brittany to watch both play alongside Taylor Swift). The tight end is entering the final year of his current contract with the Chiefs. Though Travis is still relatively young—he turns 36 in October—in terms of the NFL, Kelce is in his “golden years.”
And with his older brother, the 37-year-old Jason Kelce, enjoying the good life after retiring in 2024, Travis might call it a career once the season is over.
