Chunky Adidas shoe evolution
The first preview of this collaboration was in Namesake’s Spring/Summer 2025 presentation. This collection was inspired by heritage, family, and personal growth. Among these pillars was the first preview of the XLG. The sneakers instantly gave off a feel similar to the Balenciaga x Adidas collaboration. This particular collaboration was inspired by the Balenciaga Track sneaker, with softened details by Adidas. Despite the similarities, the XLG will be part of the Adidas Sportwear label.
The Adidas Sportwear label is the youngest branch of the Adidas franchise, and it is geared toward a more youthful and innovative design style. This was the first launch of a new franchise in 50 years, and partnering with Jenna Ortega as the face for the launch speaks to the young, fashion-forward energy of the brand. The goal of this line is to merge performance technology with the familiarity of the Originals range. Overall, the new line gives the impression of having more edgy avant-garde pieces than the rest of the brand.
XLG aesthetic breakdown
Dubbed the “XLG Metawave” and the “Future of Style” the shoe silhouette embodies its desired reputation. Embracing the same qualities as other XLG models, this shoe has a large midsole with a surrounding swerve detail. Additionally, the heel is also translucent with a unique deep curve to give more shape to the shoe. Finally, the exaggerated detailing at the tip of the shoe brings together the whole design for a more amplified look.
It is said that about kokomo is the artistic vision behind the shoe. The swerves are meant to highlight ripples of ferrofluid, specifically showing the motion this fluid takes when it is attracted to a magnet. The overall design of the shoe evokes a feeling of satisfying disorder with the detailing. The color schemes available are neutral, so the attention to the shape and details is the priority. Given the goal of the Sportswear label, this XLG model makes for a great addition in solidifying an avant-garde, fun, yet still wearable shoe.
The Adidas samba is one of the most iconic shoes the brand is known for. The sleek look makes styling versatile and easy. Another shoe that is similarly styled is the “dad shoe” aesthetic. As of recently, a sneaker by Bronson and New Balance is taking a refreshing take on the “dad shoe.” Although it still gives the classic chunky, worn look, the colors and sleekness make it seem new and different. This is all to say that the trends we are all familiar with seem to be shifting their details while maintaining the integrity of what makes them popular. Regardless of chunky or sleek, popular styles are finding fun ways to keep a fresh feel, and personally, it feels like a revitalizing move for brands.
