A$AP Rocky goes monochrome with Puma

Puma Mostro is officially spicing up the sneaker world. Although this style has been around since the 90s, it has proven to be a timeless silhouette, to the point where A$AP Rocky has given his take on the shoe. Even though he is not the only one to offer his version of this style, one could argue that his collaboration on this style has left quite an impression.

Set to be released in the Spring/Summer of 2025 at $250 USD for the second launch with A$AP, it’s clear that this is a fan favorite. The excitement of the return is also due to the confirmation of an all-grey and all-black version. However, Collina Strada and Puma also collaborated on the Monstro style. Although this collaboration shows a lot of character in terms of colorway and style, there is something about A$AP’s version that has a unique edge upon comparison. The inspiration for the original style is bold and drawn from sprint spikes and surfing shoes, automatically aligning it best with a daring take.

Considering the shoe's inspiration, it makes sense that the Puma X A$AP version complements it the best thus far. His 3D take on the detailing, bringing the spikes to life while contrasting the holes, adds more dimension and edge, modernizing the shoe’s original flare. Originally, the  Mostro is meant to be a low-profile yet distinctive quality well expressed throughout A$AP’s version. Additionally, his collaboration is the version that emphasizes the sole of the shoe the most. The contrast between the jumbo spikes in comparison to the smaller ones is what creates a distinction. Whereas, the Collina Strada collaboration had a cleaner rendition, and her use of 3D spikes added a fun accent rather than an edgy one.

Also, the Collina Strada collaboration used recycled material to add detailing flaps to the shoe. This version is more similarly aligned to the original version of the shoe, and its most significant changes lie in the colorway and tongue flaps where the co-branded logos are shown. The collaboration showcased both brands equally and ended up with a sneaker with a sense of fun and personality. Despite the fun take on this collaboration, it’s challenging to look at A$AP’s complete change in the design and feel uninspired. Something about making the entire shoe 3D elicits such a visually inspiring feeling, and it’s no wonder his collaboration popularized the silhouette all over again.

Generally speaking, partnerships are meant to represent both brands well, with the hope of changing the game for the best. The essence of the Collina Strada collaboration was successfully met. At the same time, the perspective of A$AP was also shown in his rendition. That said, both versions show how design alignment can change the perspective of a sneaker launch. It’s not to say that one version is better than the other. Rather, A$AP’s bold branding flows well with the shoe’s original intent.
