WNBA to WWE? Cunningham has a lot to ponder

Sophie Cunningham has always played with an edge. Now, she might be taking that edge into the wrestling ring.

The Indiana Fever guard and former Missouri All-American is reportedly exploring opportunities in professional wrestling, including potential involvement with WWE’s NIL and development programs. While no official deal has been announced, during a recent Comic-Con appearance in San Diego, Women of Wrestling founder David McLane recently expressed interest in recruiting Cunningham to the promotion.

It’s not a total shock.

Cunningham, 28, has been one of the WNBA’s most fiery personalities since entering the league in 2019. Known for her trash talk, hustle plays, and willingness to embrace the villain role, she quickly became a fan favorite in Phoenix and Indiana. Thus, she's a frequent target of opposing crowds.

She’s also embraced the spotlight, frequently appearing on podcasts, television panels, and viral social media clips. That crossover appeal is something wrestling promotions look for in athletes, especially women with name recognition and natural charisma.

The wrestling world has taken notice.

When asked about the interest by sports/entertainment journalist Landon Buford, Cunningham didn't exactly turn it down:

“Man, I have no idea (who I’d want to work with if I went to WWE or AEW). I thought that that tweet was pretty funny. I don’t know what will happen with that. I’m still just kind of focused on basketball but it is kind of cool but no, I’ve been a lifelong WWE fan for a really long time ever since we were little and so, I think it would be something kind of fun to get into.”

To connect the dots even further Lakers owner Jeanie Buss has an ownership stake in WOW. Even though the Lakers are being sold to Mark Walton, Buss will remain as governor of the team.

Why is Sophie a good fit for wrestling?

Cunningham would bring something different: a pro athlete already seasoned in the media, with an established fan base and a reputation for stirring the pot. She’s physical, confident, and not afraid to play the heel — all traits that translate well to the squared circle.

That said, she’s not done with basketball just yet.

Cunningham remains under contract with the Fever and is still considered part of their core rotation when healthy. She’s averaged 7 points per game for her career, and is hitting above that number with the Fever (8 points, 3.9 rebounds per game). But her future in the WNBA remains open-ended, and her interest in wrestling could mark the beginning of a dual-career transition.

From “Mizzou Made” to Mercury firebrand to Fever enforcer to possibly making a run at the next SummerSlam?

Don’t count it out.

Cunningham isn’t the first WNBA player to flirt with wrestling, but she may be the most compelling fit yet. The attitude is there. The entertainment value is obvious.

And if she ever grabs a mic in the ring, expect the boos to rain down. Just the way Sophie likes it.
